An introduction to rock climbing in Squamish, BC! Our Intro to Rock Climbing course is the perfect first step for anyone curious about the exciting sport of outdoor rock climbing.

This single-day course delivers the fundamentals required to get you outdoors and climbing rock.  The skills acquired on this course are the foundation to sport climbing, trad climbing, multi-pitch climbing, and beyond.

In addition to our in the field course, all students will have access to our online course so you can study up before you head out into the field to retain more.  Or to watch again to refresh your skills afterward.

Prerequisites: No experience needed!

Skills Learned: Useful knots, top rope anchors, belay techniques, route selection, crag hazard management and what the word 'crag' means.

8:30 am - Meet and greet at the Squamish Adventure Centre

9 am  - Travel to Smoke Bluffs park and head out to the crag (one-minute drive, ten-minute hike)

9:00 am - 4:00 pm - Climbing, learning, and high fives.

4:30 pm - Back to the cars for debriefing and more high fives

Gear List

Please come prepared to spend the whole days outside in all types of weather.  It can be anything from cold in the morning as you will be climbing in the shade to very hot in the sun!

  • Full pants or Capris. 
  • T-shirt or long sleeve
  • Warm jacket (sweat shirt, lightweight down jacket)
  • Rain/wind jacket (gore-tex)
  • Warm hat (for colder days)
  • Small back pack (30 litres)
  • Sunglasses
  • Good shoes; running/gym shoes are fine
  • Water, 1 liter
  • Food
  • Harness, Helmet, Climbing shoes (let us know if you need rentals)

What You Will Learn

Participants will practice using a top rope anchor system, the foundational skills of outdoor climbing, under direct supervision of the Guide in a supportive environment.

Is Course For You

This course is designed for individuals who have some minor experience with rock climbing and wish to be able to do simple top rope climbing outdoors. This is the first step to becoming an outdoor rock climber.

  • Minor Previous Gym Experiences (a couple times)

  • Familiarity with Belaying
